20:30 – 23:30 Zeitgeist: Spirit of our Age meet-up

HIW Room N

At this meeting we’ll discuss our theme, ideas you’d like to write (or draw) about, and our deadline date for contributions.

This issue, we’re looking for any and all submissions that capture the idea of a singular temperament that defines our era in 2019. We do recognize of course, that probably no such singular temperament exists, but we’re open to any ideas, theories, and interpretations of what this X spirit could be.

Essentially, we want to capture the now. Whether you think the now is best represented through pop-culture, politics, philosophy, or something else, we’ll take it. Perhaps, you have an idea on what the Spirit of our Age will be, and not what it currently is, we’d like to hear it. Perhaps, you believe history is circular and the spirit of this age can be found in the pages of Romantic-Era French Literature, we’d like to hear it. Perhaps, you hate emojis and think they’re destroying society at large, we disagree, but we’d still like to hear it.

If you know or even think you may want to help contribute to Zeitgeist, then we hope to see on the meeting! (You can still submit to us even if you cannot attend this meeting–but the meeting should be helpful with streamlining and directing the creative process)

Tuesday 15/10

12:30 – 14:00 Philosophy and the World Out There

HIW Room S 01.14

The first event in the Philosophy and the World Out There series will open a discussion of the worldview of one of the leading figures in the ongoing Brexit saga, Dominic Cummings. Cummings was the campaign director of the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign in the 2016 referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, and he is now Boris Johnson’s chief advisor. He is also a prolific blogger, and his writings reveal an unexpected appreciation of Nietzsche. But how does he interpret Nietzsche? And what do Cummings’ Nietzschean politics reveal about his plans for post-Brexit Britain?

With these series of talks a space is created to reflect on the reciprocal connections between philosophy and the contemporary society and to help foster discussions between students and academic staff across the Institute’s research centres.

20:00 -23:00 International Movie Night

HIW Room S 01.14

Welcome all to the second edition of NFK International Movie Nights! This time the movie we’ll be watching comes from Turkey: ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia’

The philosophical reflection on the movie afterwards will be lead by Remzi Can Yavuz. He has prepared a presentation called ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia between Turkish Literature and French Psychoanalysis’, in which the focus will be on the relevance of the movie in a critical approach on crime thriller as a genre in cinema. Remzi will also provide us with an answer on how to make sense of this movie in the broader context of Turkish modernization and the beginnings of Turkish westernised art. French Psychoanalysis is relevant in order to make sense of the “woman who correctly guessed her day of death”. Luce Irigaray’s ideas on a feminine theory of subjectivity will also be covered shortly.
