WHO ARE WE?
NFK’s Education Team represents all students of the HIW. You can come to us with questions
and grievances, opinions, and praises you may have concerning education at our faculty or on a
university level. We will help you as best we can with problems you might encounter, for instance
with your exam schedule, class schedule, study material, etc.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
Every two weeks there is an open education meeting, and all philosophy students are invited, and
encouraged, to attend! This is a space for everyone to share their opinion about education at the
HIW and speak directly with your representatives. We also discuss the Stura (the student council) agenda and the agenda of the POC (the permanent education board of the
faculty). You can find the date and location of these meetings in the NFK calendar which is on our
website nfk.be , and the NFK Education facebook page.
Do you have a proposal or a complaint about one of your professors or courses? Whether you
have feedback about course structure or how a professor deals with the material, you can give
your input using our suggestion box. This form is 100% anonymous: Education anonymous form
At the end of each semester, you will be asked to evaluate your classes and professors via
official evaluation forms. The results are very important and are taken very seriously by the
faculty.
Furthermore, as of 2015, there is COBRA (Cooperation, Reflection and Action, with attention for
Checks & Balances.), securing the quality of education on a faculty level. It is a method that
evaluates education and its structure from the bottom up through talks and discussions with
randomly chosen students about their experiences of the education in their faculty. You can find
more information about it on the website of KU Leuven as well as on sturakuleuven.be/cobra. For
the student representatives the outcome of these discussions are very important because this
gives us a view on which topics we should focus on.
We hope you now have a little insight into what we do as student representatives in the HIW, and
please don’t hesitate to get in touch if there are issues we can help with!
HOW TO KEEP IN TOUCH?
HOW DOES EDUCATION OPERATE?
We represent the students of philosophy, in various bodies and councils both on faculty and
university level. We are present in the POC (permanent education committee), the Faculty
Council, the Faculty Board, and Stura (the Student Council).
Overall there are two POC’s (Permanent Education Committees): one for the Dutch-speaking
program, the other one for the International Program. On this level, existing matters
concerning education at play within the HIW are discussed i.e. the programs, didactical methods,
and exam systems.
The POC also regulates and decides on the practical organization of education i.e. class
schedules, guidance with studying, exam format, and exam flexibility. This is the place where
we can share the general opinion of the philosophy students with the other members of
the faculty. The Dutch POC includes 4 student representatives and the POC of the international
program includes 6 student representatives.
The POC offers its proposals to the Faculty Council about the Philosophy Program. In the
faculty council Members can formulate proposals and advice in relation to general policy of the
faculty. Five student representatives are present in the faculty council.
The Faculty Board conducts the daily business of the faculty. Here we have one seat.
Furthermore, the education team has a seat in Stura which is the official Student Council on the
level of the entire university. The students of the HIW have one vote. These meetings take place
bi-weekly. For more information please visit their website: sturakuleuven.be.
