Tuesday 15/10

12:30 – 14:00 Philosophy and the World Out There

HIW Room S 01.14

The first event in the Philosophy and the World Out There series will open a discussion of the worldview of one of the leading figures in the ongoing Brexit saga, Dominic Cummings. Cummings was the campaign director of the ‘Vote Leave’ campaign in the 2016 referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, and he is now Boris Johnson’s chief advisor. He is also a prolific blogger, and his writings reveal an unexpected appreciation of Nietzsche. But how does he interpret Nietzsche? And what do Cummings’ Nietzschean politics reveal about his plans for post-Brexit Britain?

With these series of talks a space is created to reflect on the reciprocal connections between philosophy and the contemporary society and to help foster discussions between students and academic staff across the Institute’s research centres.

Welcome all to the second edition of NFK International Movie Nights! This time the movie we’ll be watching comes from Turkey: ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia’

The philosophical reflection on the movie afterwards will be lead by Remzi Can Yavuz. He has prepared a presentation called ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia between Turkish Literature and French Psychoanalysis’, in which the focus will be on the relevance of the movie in a critical approach on crime thriller as a genre in cinema. Remzi will also provide us with an answer on how to make sense of this movie in the broader context of Turkish modernization and the beginnings of Turkish westernised art. French Psychoanalysis is relevant in order to make sense of the “woman who correctly guessed her day of death”. Luce Irigaray’s ideas on a feminine theory of subjectivity will also be covered shortly.

POC Elections

During the Open Education Meeting on Wednesday the 16th of October from 6PM until 8PM the new student representatives are elected. They will represent the students in the POC (Permanent Education Committee). You can find more information about POC on this website under Education, Education representation.

The candidate for POC-N (Permant Education Committee for the Dutch program)

Clara Charaf Al Din

The candidates for POC-E (Permanent Education Committee for the English program)

Sander Tuns
Hello, my name is Sander. I’m from the Netherlands and are a Master student at HIW. I would like to represent the thoughts and needs of the international masterstudents in the POC (Permanent Education Committee) to contribute to the experiences of all current and future generations of students.

Valerie Hufkens
My name is Valerie and after finishing the (Dutch) bachelor and master’s programme at our institute I am now enrolled in the Research Master of Philosophy (abridged programme). I would like to be a member of the POC because both the quality our institute offers and the idea that the voice of our students should play a constitutive role in the shaping of this education are things that hit home closely for me. I was the vice-president of NFK during the academic year 2016 – 2017 during which I also participated as a student representative at STURA and LOKO meetings. I have been a member of NFK’s board of directors ever since.

Ildar tukhtakhunov
I would like to apply for a position in the international POC with this letter. The position immediately interested me because I have had a longstanding interest in education curriculum. In fact, my initial two years of my Bachelor in Boston University were in Educational Sciences, and I plan to go into the field of education after my studies. Therefore, the prospect of being able to give feedback, discuss issues, and generally contribute to student representation. I truly hope that you consider me for this position.
